Writing Workshop

Last month we began our first writing Unit of Study, Small Moments.   In the Small Moments unit we have learned the routines of writing workshop.  We have learned that writers write about topics that are important to them.  We have learned some basic editing skills.   We have also worked on “bringing our stories to life” by “unfreezing” our characters with dialogue and action.    The children have learned the importance of showing their ideas with details (i.e. My stomach dropped when I got to the top.) and not simply telling them ( i.e. I was scared).  They have accumulated their writing for this unit in their writing folders - be on the lookout for some stories from our first “bend” in the unit to come home shortly for you to enjoy. I have saved the best for assessment purposes.  Please keep in mind that many of their stories were written at the beginning of the unit and may not reflect all the learnings from the unit.  Our Small Moments unit will continue until just after Thanksgiving.  Be sure to ask your child about some of the stories they have written so far! I hope you enjoy the "Poplet" below!

Room 13 Virtual Tour!

Room 13 Virtual Tour

Hi Room 13!  I am so excited for school to begin tomorrow!  I thought I would send along this video of our classroom so you could take your parents on a tour (or two) and talk about our first few days in school together.  Can you name the different areas of our classroom? (This might take a few days to learn!) I hope to share videos and pictures of our work together a lot this year.  I am still learning to take and upload pictures and videos on my ipad but I hope to get better each time I try!  Click on the "Room 13 Virtual Tour" link above to see our classroom.  See you tomorrow!

Check out our wonder project!

Paget Presidential Project

Hi Parents,

Click on the link above to see our "Wonder Project".  We worked with Mrs. Groden in the library to research and write about some presidential things!  We used the database "Pebble Go" on the ipads, as well as books, to find the information we were wondering about our topics.  We took notes in our own words and then wrote and drew about what we learned.  Mrs. Groden invited us back to the library after our work was complete to record our work on the Adobe Voice app.  It was quite an undertaking!  We hope you like our finished product.

We would love to hear your thoughts about our work.  After viewing our project, please take a minute to send us an email telling us your opinion about our project.  (We are working on opinion writing in writing workshop!)  If you could support your opinion with 2 or 3 reasons (why you like our project - or don't ????...), that would be even better!  We will share your emails each morning during morning meeting as they arrive.  We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Organism Popplet!

Hi Parents,

Here is the other Popplet I mentioned in my last post.  As you can tell, we are NOT a squeemish bunch!  Room 13 loved observing our millipede and pill bug friends.  Please let me know if you are willing to adopt any of our living critters (see newsletter for details).

Winter weather is here!

Hi Parents,

It appears that winter has finally arrived!  Last week, at least 5 children a day did not have either a hat or mittens.  25 minutes is a long time to be out in the cold.  Please assist your child with packing their bag each morning to be sure they have all of their winter gear.  Hats, mittens, snow pants and boots will be required everyday while the snow is on the ground.  A change of shoes is also required for their time spent indoors.  Thank you for your attention to these requests.

My January-February newsletter link has been "repaired".  I am sorry for the inconvenience it caused. Thank you to all who reached out to me for access to the newsletter in the interim.    Please let me know if you continue to have problems accessing my newsletter from my blog.

Tomorrow a Valentine HW assignment for parents will arrive home in a manilla envelope.  There is a letter inside the envelope explaining the assignment.  Please return your Valentine to school in the same envelope to be sure your child does not see it!  A Room 13 Valentine list will come home shortly as well...

Finally, there are 2 volunteer slots open this week for centertime - Wednesday 9-10:30 and Friday 10:15-12:15.  Please let me know if you can help!

GO PATS!!!!

Johnny the K visits Memorial School!

Johnny the K, a favorite performer in the Medfield schools for 25 years, made his annual visit to Memorial School today. He brought words and songs of kindness, appreciating diversity and using your imagination to the students and staff with his fun loving approach and of course, his collection of silly hats!  We really enjoyed his performance and brought many important learnings back to class with us - treat others the way you want to be treated, READ, READ, READ and bring a smile to someone's face with small acts of kindness.  We LOVE Johnny the K!
