Bring on the Parade!

How lucky were we to have such beautiful Fall weather for our parade????

Happy Halloween!

Here we are just before the Halloween parade!  Great costumes everyone.

The Cutest Little Pumpkins 2!

We learned the poem Five Little Pumpkins. We made puppets and took turns putting on mini puppet shows for our classmates. Be on the lookout for this poem in our poem notebooks this week.

The Cutest Little Pumpkins

We Read Pumpkin Head. The jack-o-lanterns in this book are very original. We tried to do the same!  How did we do?

Thank You Mrs Boylan!

Mrs Boylan, Ally’s Mom, came to visit Room 13 in honor of fire safety week. She is a fire fighter in Natick. We learned about testing our smoke detectors at home and tried on some of Mrs Boylan’s gear. Mrs Boylan gave all of us fire helmets and safety badges.  Thank you for coming to visit us Mrs Boylan!

Comparing Folktales

Ms Galvin has been teaching us about folk heroes from America and around the world. We have read Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan and John Henry to name a few. Here we are sharing our posters comparing the similarities and differences between Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan.

Star Lab Planetarium!

We had a visitor from the Museum of Science today!  Kim taught us how to be scientists. We used binoculars to make observations and then drew what we saw. Then we were invited into an inflatable planetarium in the gym. Kim taught us about planets and constellations. She showed us how to find the North Star and projected the constellations on the ceiling. It was so cool and we were so well behaved. When we came back to Room 13 Ms Galvin helped us remember what we had learned so we could write about our "field trip" in our memory books.

Math

We have been working hard on problem solving in our math journals. To date we have solved 4 different types of problems - put together, add to, take from, and both addends unknown. Here are some photos of our work taken during our group share. This week we learned that some story problems have more than one solution!

Book Time!

Did you know there were Super Readers in your midst???  We have been learning about our super reading muscles as we develop our super reading habits. This week we began our booktine routine. We worked with a teacher to select 3 fiction and 3 non-fiction books that we can READ by ourselves as well as one free choice book. We found our book boxes and practiced reading in good reading spots all over the classroom. In the next few weeks we will work together daily to build our reading stamina from 5-10 minutes. Here is what super readers look like during booktime!

Shared Writing

It takes a long time to reacclimate to school and a new set of classmates. One of the first routines we learn is our shared writing routine. Each day we gather on the rug to interview the job person. This allows us time to get to know each person individually while we practice beginning writing skills on our whiteboards such as finger spacing, spelling and even capitalization and punctuation. Ask your child to show you their "2 finger checkers". See if they can remember anything about the peers we have interviewed already. Be sure to look for our "All About Us" charts the next time you are in.

Math!

We have a lot of things to accomplish in math this year. We will need to work together as a team, problem solve, be persistent and build our stamina to name a few! We have been fine tuning our good counting strategies since school began and exploring the many math tools in Room 13. Free building has been a component of almost every math block since school began. Here are some of our creations!

We are off to a great start...though Mrs. Paget's blogging skills are rusty!
My apologies for leaving Ryen out of my first post!
