Pat on the back celebration!

We made Valentine cookies today to celebrate filling our penny jar for the second time! Many thanks go to Mrs Razza who managed to help the children select their books for their book envelopes AND set up, roll and bake cookies with small groups of children. It was an all day affair topped off with a fire drill when it was finally time to eat them!  Good times!

New Year Resolutions!

Ask your child to share what they have resolved to do better at in 2016!

Martin Luther King

We spent some time discussing what we already knew about MLK before beginning our study of this important historical figure. It turns out we knew a lot!!  We have read stories, learned about the origin of our skin color, watched Martin's Big Words and written about his character traits so far.  Be sure to check in with your child to see what they have learned!

Johnny the K was IN THE HOUSE!!!

We had a great time with Johnny the K on January 14!  He performed many songs while showcasing his extensive collection of hats. Ask your child about some of the messages Johnny taught us through his music!

Check out Will's moves in the lower left corner!  Johnny chose him and a few others to go up on stage!

Writing Workshop

Last month we began our first writing Unit of Study, Small Moments.   In the Small Moments unit we have learned the routines of writing workshop.  We have learned that writers write about topics that are important to them.  We have learned some basic editing skills.   We have also worked on “bringing our stories to life” by “unfreezing” our characters with dialogue and action.    The children have learned the importance of showing their ideas with details (i.e. My stomach dropped when I got to the top.) and not simply telling them ( i.e. I was scared).  They have accumulated their writing for this unit in their writing folders - be on the lookout for some stories from our first “bend” in the unit to come home shortly for you to enjoy. I have saved the best for assessment purposes.  Please keep in mind that many of their stories were written at the beginning of the unit and may not reflect all the learnings from the unit.  Our Small Moments unit will continue until just after Thanksgiving.  Be sure to ask your child about some of the stories they have written so far! I hope you enjoy the "Poplet" below!

Room 13 Virtual Tour!

Room 13 Virtual Tour

Hi Room 13!  I am so excited for school to begin tomorrow!  I thought I would send along this video of our classroom so you could take your parents on a tour (or two) and talk about our first few days in school together.  Can you name the different areas of our classroom? (This might take a few days to learn!) I hope to share videos and pictures of our work together a lot this year.  I am still learning to take and upload pictures and videos on my ipad but I hope to get better each time I try!  Click on the "Room 13 Virtual Tour" link above to see our classroom.  See you tomorrow!
